Homeopathy is an entirely different system of medicine than what we are used to, but it is a complete health care system capable of healing most things that conventional medicine can, and many times doing it better. With classical homeopathy, we try to cure the problem (i.e. allergies, asthma, diabetes, hypothyroid, recurrent cystitis, recurrent ear infections, etc.), from the inside out, so that it doesn't come back. A hundred years ago, homeopathy was used as much as conventional medicine in the United States. In fact, the first medical schools in the U.S. were homeopathic schools. One of the main reasons that it went out of favor, is that it is HARD. It takes a lot more of the practitioner's time, both in taking the history, and in figuring out what medication to give. Although results start to be evident immediately, it can take some time for the full cure to take place. While homeopathy is curing the primary complaint, it also heals the rest of the body, both mentally and physically, so that at the end of treatment, the entire body will be in better health.
Conventional medicine says that organisms (bacteria, viruses) cause disease. Homeopathy says that the individual has to be susceptible to that organism for disease to occur. This happens when the body's healing system (homeopaths call it the life force) is weak. Then it can't keep the entire individual healthy. The place disease shows up in an animal depends on the particular tendency of that individual to be weak in that area. This happens to all of us. I get colds a lot, but I have never had the flu. My husband never got my colds, but he got the flu frequently. Conventional medicine would give antibiotics to kill the bacteria, or, in the case of viruses, wait till the disease runs it's course. Homeopathy seeks to remove the susceptibility to that disease by strengthening the body's life force so that the body can heal the present problem, AND not let it happen again.
